Top 5 Best Catchers Right Now.

So I am voting on my top five best catchers in baseball right now and who are the best catchers leading up to opening day.

1. Minnesota Twins - Joe Mauer

Joe Mauer is by far one of the best catchers in the game and one of the best hitters right now. This kid can flat out do it all. Mauer has put a new meaning in the word catcher. Most catchers in baseball are great behind the plate and okay at hitting, but this guy is great at both. He is a bulldog behind the plate and in 2010 he had a down year but he had a knee injury but somehow still hit .327, 9 home runs, and drove in 75 RBI's. Mauer has won 4 AL Sliver Slugger awards, 3 AL Gold Glove awards, and 1 AL MVP award. The only thing Mauer is missing on his resume is a World Series title other than that he is the game’s best catcher we have seen in a long time.

2. San Francisco Giants - Buster Posey

Buster Posey almost reminds me of a Joe Mauer in the National League. Posey as a rookie came up and did his job very nicely. When he first came up Posey didn't even catch, he was used over at first base. But Posey got his shot at catcher and he didn't let anyone down. In the next few years as he matures he will be one the best catchers in the NL for a long time and will be the Giants key player down the road. As a rookie Posey hit .305, 18 home runs, and drove in 67 RBI's, this kid hits for power, speed, and average and he has shown it all in just a half a season. Posey won the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year award and also won a World Series title in 2010 at the age of 23. His first postseason numbers were pretty good with a .288 average, 1 home run, and 5 RBI's. Not too bad for a rookie under the spot light his first ever postseason.

3. Atlanta Braves - Brian McCann

McCann has been around this game for such a long time and it's hard to believe that he does not have a World Series under his belt. This guy over the years has had problems with his eyes but somehow still hits the ball really well. He is built like a outfielder or more like a first baseman and is tall like a outfielder or first baseman. He is one of the more power hitting catchers in the game and is always a treat to go yard. Behind the plate he is a really good catcher but like I said he is really known for his hitting and how good of an eye he has with seeing the ball well even with eye problems. McCann this season hit .269, 21 home runs, and drove in 77 RBI's, he has also won 4 NL Silver Slugger awards and 1 All-Star Game MVP award.

4. Philadelphia Phillies - Carlos Ruiz

Now Carlos Ruiz might be one of the most underrated catchers in the game as we speak right now. A lot of people over look Ruiz but he is a rock behind home plate and last season he started to learn how to hit better and become a better zone hitter and lay off a lot of bad pitches. In 2010 Ruiz had the highs average on the Phillies and the Phillies have a lot of great hitter on their ball club. Ruiz batted .302, 8 home runs, and drove in 53 RBI's, also Ruiz has come up with a lot of key clutch hits in games, whether it's a game winning hit, game teeing hit, or helping the Phillies taking the lead with a big hit. It's very surprising that Ruiz does not have a gold glove award with a rocket arm he has behind the plate and how good he is behind the plate having caught a perfect game and a no-hitter in 2010. Ruiz’s postseason play is really good as well, his average is .280. 4 home runs, and has 15 RBI's, he has also helped the Phillies win a World Series title back in 2008.

5. St. Louis Cardinals - Yadier Molina

Now Molina has been one of the game’s best catchers behind the plate. He frames the ball very nicely and always knows what pitch to call for the most when needed to get that big out. As a hitter he isn't that bad either but he is more known for his defense. He is a leader on the Cardinals and we saw that last year when he stuck up for his team when the Cardinals and Reds got into a big fight on the field. He is a very well respected catcher in the league and is still pretty young. Last year Molina hit .262, 6 home runs, and drove in 62 RBI's, he has also won 3 NL Gold Glove awards, and won a World Series title back in 2006. His postseason numbers as a catcher are by far one of the best in the NL batting .315, 2 home runs, and 11 RBI's. Expect him to be around this game for a lot longer.
